08/02/2013 – “Guest: Christopher Dyer!”

This Friday, we will have former GD member (from the days when we were known as Twenties Group) join us as guest facilitator for a conversation on community health and the role of groups like ours. He will also talk to us about the early days of Twenties Group/Gay District and how he has seen it and the DC LGBT community change over time.

As usual, we will meet at the DC Center at 8:30 pm for discussion, followed by dinner or drinks nearby.

Best,
Jay Gilliam

Read more about Chris:
Chris Dyer is a veteran LGBT activist in Washington DC. He formerly served as the Director of the Office of GLBT Affairs for the District of Columbia Government under Mayor Adrian Fenty. In this position, Dyer was responsible for recommending and implementing policy changes to improve the lives of GLBT residents in the District and represent the Mayor to the GLBT community.

In 1997, Dyer founded the Youth Pride Alliance, a 501(c)3 organization that sponsors an annual Youth Pride event for GLBTQ youth and their supporters. Dyer got the idea for Youth Pride as a result of his experience organizing Capital Pride which he did for years, as well as his experience as a member and facilitator of the 20s Group which was a predecessor to Gay District.

Dyer has been recognized with a number of awards and enjoys Caps hockey and singing karaoke.

Great Sexpectations–July 19

The “three-date rule” has its own Wikipedia page. But is it really an ironclad law? The question of when relations become sexual is a political, cultural and societal minefield. (Relatedly, the New York Times found that college women like to have sex.)

When do you expect sex in the course of dating someone? A casual hookup online or at a club? Even in other circumstances? Are you ever disappointed or understanding if the other person does not want to have sex? Do you ever think it is a savvy move to keep someone interested to not hook up?

Join us at the DC Center at 1318 U St. NW. Friday at 830 to discuss such questions and more.

Afterwards, we’ll eat out at a local establishment on U St. and maybe, who knows, you’ll meet someone there and then one thing will lead to another…

07/12/2013 – GD Outing: Jazz in the Sculpture Garden

This upcoming Friday is not our regularly scheduled discussion, but since summer is in full force (hot summer days and nights, even hotter boys in short shorts, and frequent outdoor happy hours), Gay District will be taking advantage and doing a summer social at Jazz in the Sculpture Garden near the Smithsonian museums. It’ll be a fun way to soak in the last bit of sun for the day, unwind after a week back at work, and listen to good music.
So come join us for a relaxing evening outside! Meeting details below:

What: Gay District at Jazz in the Sculpture Garden
When: Friday, July 12 from 6:30-8:30
Where: National Gallery of Art Sculpture Garden located on corner of 7th and Constitution Ave, NW (closest Metro stops are Archives and Smithsonian). Look for Jay and other gay boys with the Gay District signage.

After the jazz, we can continue our conversations over food and drinks at a place in Gallery Place. Can’t wait to see you all there!  Please check back for a Friday update as the event may be cancelled due to weather.
