Schock Claim: Is Outing Still A Thing in 2013?

Earlier this month, freelance journalist Itay Hod tried to out Rep. Aaron Schock (R-Ill.) on Facebook, alleging that a colleague of his saw him in the shower with a male roommate. The post generated substantial buzz, and got picked up by several media outlets.

Schock, who voted against the repeal of “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” and is not in favor of gay marriage, has been the subject for gay rumors for years. TMZ found him in the gay part of Tampa and asked about Paul Ryan’s fitness, he’s been on the cover of Men’s Health and Gawker wrote a post about his colorful outfit. But no real evidence has emerged that he is gay.

The story triggered a debate about outing in 2013, and one I want to continue in group. Is it still an acceptable tactic for the gay rights movement? Have you ever been outed on a smaller scale? When is it acceptable to ask if a public figure is gay? Is there news value in knowing the sexuality of public figures?

We will discuss these questions and more at Gay District on Friday, January 17 at the DC Center at 2000 14th St., in the Reeves Center, at 8:30 pm. Afterwards, we’ll eat out at a local establishment.

If you have any troubles getting into the Reeves Center, email me at lukegjohnson at gmail dot com or try me at (617) 877-5484.
