The Virginia House of Delegates rejected the nomination of Richmond prosecutor Tract Thorne-Begland’s bid for a judgeship solely because he is gay earlier this week. The specific charges? He’s in a gay marriage and had the audacity to speak out against Don’t Ask Don’t Tell (no longer the law of the land) in 1993 since he was honorably discharged under the Navy. Nevermind, that he likely wouldn’t see any cases to do with gay rights and had it in writing that he would recuse himself where there was any conflict. (Dalia Lithwick of Slate has the best article on this.)

We’ll discuss this rather disturbing development out of our neighbor to the south. But also want to broaden it and discuss whether you’ve been ever rejected for anything for based on sexual orientation at work or elsewhere and strategies to deal with it.

Afterwards, we’ll eat out at a local establishment.

Reply to me via E-mail with your vote, post on our FB page which topic you prefer, or even get the ball rolling by sharing your feelings on either topic to round up others into camp….

Decadence and Downfall or What Doth a Diva Make?!

Decadence and Downfall

In the world today we are taught that the perfection isn’t just an idea but an attainable tangible goal. That fame, fortune and immortality can all depend on how many likes you get on a Facebook status update or how many times your picture appears in Metro Weekly. There is no one that understands this more than the gay man. From spending hours in the gym to sculpt , tone and maintain our bodies to the hyper-vigilance of “healthy” eating. From the all night party bus benders to the 6 pack of Redbull just to get to the office after a wild weekend. But what is the cost? Does this pressure for an unattainable idea lead to self destruction? Men in The LGBT community have some of the highest propensity towards aaddiction and substance abuse. Is there a correlation? Does the pressure we take on to remain immortal in appearance in fact shorten our lives? Does is really matter how bright your light shines if you’re really just burning the candle at both ends?

What doth a Diva make

From Dorthy Dandridge to Halle Berry. From Audrey Hepburn to Michelle Pfiefer. We as gay men have adored the hyper femininity of our leading ladies just as much as we lust after the hyper masculine in their co-stars. But what in fact does a Diva make?! Is it the troubled past and personal pitfalls that lead to Academy notoriety? The no holds barred bitch bravado that accentuates her every action? The tragic romantic antics that make any script look pale in comparison? Is there subtext in the filmography or personal story of these leading ladies that speak directly to us? Or do we just enjoy a good Bitch regardless of her talent? How has camp, drama, or even comedy help to shape our appreciation of these GORGEOUS creatures?

This Friday we will be joined by Gabriel Arana, web editor of The American Prospect, who recently wrote ”My So-Called Ex-Gay Life.”

In the article, he recounts his experiences with ex-gay therapy, which he underwent during high school after his parents discovered he was gay. He also reports on the ex-gay movement, and talks to Robert Spitzer, the author of a 2001 study claiming that the therapy worked. Spitzer, interestingly, also led the effort to declassify homosexuality as a mental disorder. In his visit with him, Spitzer renounces the study.

Today, news broke that Spitzer apologized for the study.

Join us at 8:30 Friday at St. Margaret’s. Afterwards, as always, we will go out for dinner.

Read the article, it’s a gut-wrenching personal essay combined with reporting on the ex-gay movement. Here’s an excerpt:

Early in my freshman year of high school, I came home to find my mom sitting on her bed, crying. She had snooped through my e-mail and discovered a message in which I confessed to having a crush on a male classmate.

“Are you gay?” she asked. I blurted out that I was.

“I knew it, ever since you were a little boy.”

Her resignation didn’t last long. My mom is a problem solver, and the next day she handed me a stack of papers she had printed out from the Internet about reorientation, or “ex-gay,” therapy. I threw them away. I said I didn’t see how talking about myself in a therapist’s office was going to make me stop liking guys.

Read it here: http://prospect.org/article/my-so-called-ex-gay-life

Are you often befriending gay men in hopes of getting a date with them later? Do you dream of taking your gay BF to another level–like BFF? What happens when FBs just become BFs? Do these sound like your gay social circle? Come out Friday to talk about all of the different ways we experience friendships, relationships, and the circle of lust and love that often surround them.

As always, we will meet at 8:30 pm at St. Margaret’s Church for discussion followed by dinner (and more convo) nearby. Can’t wait to talk with my GD friends this Friday!

The first we will share gay horror stories–whether you have a real-life story of a bad date gone really creepy, heard about an unlucky incident that happened to a friend of a friend, or a poor, unfortunate gay soul you’ve read about or seen on TV or in a movie.

The second half of the evening we will collectively make up the gayest terrible, horrible, no good, very bad Friday the 13th our imaginations can dream up to exorcise any possibilities those things could happen to us by night’s end.

Of course, we will go out afterward to eat & drink together to end what should be a very happy Friday the 13th. Discussion starts at 8 pm at St. Margaret’s Church in Dupont as always. Until then, mind ladders and black cats!

With Youth Pride 2012 just a few short weeks away I got to thinking, “What is it that the gay youth of today will inherit from us, their gay elders?” Are we responsible to teach them the ways of safety in cruising? Is the history of Dupont Circle that is slowly being lost important for those up and coming Gay-bies to know? What influence can/do we have in insuring the next set of young LGBT activists have the support and knowledge that they need in order to continue to create change when we are too busy changing diapers (whether they are our children’s or our own)? More importantly how can you as an individual leave an LGBT legacy for others to strive or admire? Whether it’s being the queen of the social scene or the poz life advocate and educator. Whether the knowledge you pass is to be safe with your heart as well as your body, how will you want to leave it and who do you want to give it to? How much knowledge and strength have we gained or lost due to the generation who lost their fight in the early epidemic of HIV/AIDS?

This Friday let’s sit and discuss how we want the next generation (Generation Fab!) to succeed and how we whether want to have a hand in helping them do it.

As per always we’ll be meeting at 8:30 p.m. at St. Margaret’s Episcopal, 1830 Connecticut Ave NW, via the Parish Office entrance/buzzer. After discussion we will head to dinner and afterwards see what trouble we can get ourselves into!

This Friday, those in attendance of Gay Districts weekly facilitated discussion will help us decide the topic from the two options listed below!

Houseboys, Rent-boys, Gay for Pay and on call sex workers. We will discuss the facts and myths for all thing associated with Sex, inc.! What is “Sex Positive” and how does it pertain to the world of sex workers? Where are the lines of legality blurred and when/where are they broken? Would you ever offer yourself up given the opportunity, have you already? Everyone has a price; what is yours?

With the recent acts of violence against two gay men in two separate encounters over this past weekend how does one maintain their feeling of safety in the city they live in? More importantly how do we respond to these horrendous attacks? Can we comfort and reach out to those assaulted? Can we stand together in a singular voice or an outcry that we will NOT accept this? Where do we go from here and how does this news impact you and those in your circle of friends?

As usual our discussion will start at 8:30pm at St. Margaret’s Episcopalian Church, 1830 Connecticut Avenue, NW. Afterwards we will head out to dinner at a local establishment and perhaps a drink or two to get our livers ready for St. Patrick’s Day!

Jacket-free weather is here, and with it will soon come an explosion of social occasions and warmer-weather pastimes. We’ll now feel the allure of vacations, sporting events, rooftop happy hours, and an increased interest in all activities available year-round, simply because you won’t freeze your harbles off getting there.

With the limited budgets many of us are working with, or perhaps the simple desire to spend wisely, regardless of income, how can you “have it all” on the cheap? Come share advice on destinations, events, and deals appropriate for the cost-conscious homo. Tell us about the happy hour where $2 can put you in the hospital, the discount bus fare to Rehoboth–so long as you don’t mind going with a 50′s-and-up LGBT nudist group, and so forth.

As always, we’ll be meeting at 8:30 p.m. at St. Margaret’s Episcopal, 1830 Connecticut Ave NW, via the Parish Office entrance/buzzer. Dinner afterwards will be ladies’ choice, with voting options limited to $10-and-under meal options, befitting our theme.

See you then!

There have been a proliferation of new gay (stereo)types lately–from otters to pups to chasers. You can see one type on YouTube with the Disappointing Gay video series. Even our straight male allies that mask their heterosexuality in stylish clothes have changed types from metrosexuals to hipsters.

So this week we will deconstruct all of these old and new types to see what it all means. Will knowing what kind of gay I am help me find my matching type? Are there really more otters at DC Eagle than Town? And is matching types ever that easy?

Check out this Gay Cliques Census survey that was created to shed some light on the demographics of the gay community and discover what cliques are actually in use (e.g. Bears, Cubs, etc.), the relationship between cliques and attraction to other cliques, how tops/bottoms range between groups, and what the geographic differences are between cliques. We will use some of this to jumpstart our discussion.

Come out for a fun discussion on new gay (stereo)types. As always, we start at 8:30 pm at St. Margaret’s Church and will enjoy some food and more convo at a local eatery afterward.

No, really.

This week, as Valentine’s Day/Singles Awareness Day approaches and we all assess our dating lives to date, why not take a few moments to embrace what’s wrong with our approaches to dating, relationships, and love–and how truly hilarious our faults can be? If you’re single, tell us all about how terrible you are at apologizing, how you can’t stop power-belching to save your life, or how clingy you were in your last relationship. Not single? No problem! Share how truly grateful you are that your partner hasn’t commented on your thunderous sleep-farts, the fact that you never clean the bathroom, or your inability to fill up the ice trays once they’ve been emptied.. for several weeks.

Come one, come all–but leave your hang-ups and self-confidence at home. This is all about laughing at our mistakes regardless of our inability to stop making them. As always, we’ll be meeting at St. Margaret’s (1830 Connecticut Ave) via the Parish Office Door at 8:30 on Friday. Afterwards we’ll head across the circle to Bread and Brew to see what their ever-changing menu will have to offer in their cozy downstairs bar.

A Mandonna dancer recently said that she’s “bringing gay to the Super Bowl” in her upcoming halftime performance this Sunday. (However, previous Super Bowl halftime shows have registered on the high end of the Kinsey scale.)

What do you for the Super Bowl? Do you watch it or do other things during? Who are you rooting for? How do you think Madonna will do–is she over the hill? Do you have any special customs for it (cook anything)? Do you “bring gay” to the Super Bowl?

Also, GLSEN is running an ad during the Super Bowl about not using “gay” as an adjective. We’ll discuss that too.

So whether you want to talk Madonna or talk about the Patriots (or Giants), there’ll be something for you.

We’ll meet at 8:30 at the church, and afterwards we’ll eat at a local establishment.
